For first responders, military personnel, and veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or occupational stress injury.
A 2018 study with U.S. military veterans found that participants had significantly decreased PTSD scores after three weeks of Therapeutic horseback riding (THR) and concluded that THR may be a clinically effective treatment for reducing PTSD symptoms.
Horses have larger electromagnetic field than humans do, so when we step into theirs, we sync, which leads to a lowering of our blood pressure and pulse.
Working with horses helps builds confidence and allows us to be present, which takes the mind away from stress and trauma. It effectively builds new neuropathways of positive association in the brain, starving the brain’s trauma pathways.
When we've experienced trauma, we tend to live in the fight-or-flight part of our brain, which makes it difficult to process complex thoughts and emotions.
Working with horses helps us transition to the frontal part of the brain, where processing of complex thoughts and emotions takes place, and we secrete oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin which are the hormones of attachment, happiness, belonging, and love.
Humans quickly bond with horses, which allows us to feel safe, heard, and wanted. It gives us something positive to focus on.
Bonding not just with horses, but other first responders who have gone through similar struggles is incredibly healing and supportive.
